As the RRS Discovery sets off for her last scientific mission, scientists, engineers, officers and crew share their recollections of working on board during her 50 years of service.

Discovery first set sail in 1962 – the year of the Cuban missile crisis and the first sales of the Ford Cortina. She cost £850,000 and will soon be replaced by a new vessel bearing the name of Discovery, which is being built at a cost of around £75 million.
